Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most frequently asked questions we receive about treatments and skincare.
What is a facial? Why do I need one?
A facial is a professional cleansing, purifying, and beautifying treatment of the skin on the face and neck. Facials are the number one treatment performed by estheticians. Facials are a good way for your skin care therapist to get a good understanding of your skin. In combination with a consultation an esthetician will be able to offer guidance regarding skin care products as well as suggesting more aggressive targeted treatments. Tell your esthetician exactly what you want to get out of your facial, and she/he will be able to recommend a facial to meet your needs. You should never feel pressure to purchase new products or other treatments. Expert advice is included with your treatment. Professional guidance is available only if wanted.
What do I need to know before my first facial?
The most important thing to know is you’re going to get the opportunity to relax! For best results, complete the online intake form and think about what your objective is and be ready to communicate that to your esthetician. Are you looking for anti-aging results? Do you have acne you would like to clear up? If you would like to discuss product regimen or recommendations, you can bring the products you have/use in a bag or take pictures of them to discuss with your esthetician.
How do I prepare for a facial?
Be sure to allow enough time to fill out a comprehensive intake prior to your treatment. Plan to arrive a little early so you will not feel rushed and can enjoy the entire length of your treatment. Remember that your hair may become damp during the facial and will usually be held back from your face with a soft wrap or headband, so you may not want to schedule a public appearance right after your facial! There is no need to remove your makeup prior to the appointment, as it will be cleansed off during the facial. We recommend discontinuing the use of retinoids 24 hours prior to your appointment. You can wear makeup to your appointment if needed, and your esthetician will double cleanse your skin to ensure it is all removed prior to your service
What should I expect during the facial?
Facials are generally very relaxing and soothing. Your esthetician will explain to you what the treatment steps will be. Be sure to communicate with your esthetician during the facial if any product burns, itches, or if you need anything or have any questions. Otherwise, just lie back and enjoy the experience. Each treatment is a little different, however all facials generally include the following steps:
1. Makeup removal and cleansing of the skin
2. Skin analysis
3. Exfoliation by mechanical, enzymatic or chemical means
4. Extraction of blackheads and other impurities manually (using gloved hands and cotton or tissue around the fingers with gentle pressure to remove the impacted pore)
5. Application of products targeted to your skin & treatment goals
6. Finishing products specifically selected to nourish & hydrate your skin.
What should I expect after my facial?
After a facial, your skin will probably be soft, smooth, and well hydrated. However, if multiple extractions were needed or if you required a fair amount of exfoliation, your face may be somewhat rosy for one to two hours or more, depending on how sensitive your skin is. This is quite normal. You can apply mineral makeup after your facial if there is some redness you want to conceal.
How often should I get a facial?
Monthly facials are ideal because the outermost layer of visible skin will completely renew itself approximately every 28 days. In this time your skin cells are constantly being replicated from the treated cells to replace the old cells. If you commit to monthly facials, your skin cells will begin to replicate the now healthier cells, giving you an overall better complexion. *Acne, Microcurrent, and Rosacea treatments require more frequent treatments as we begin to correct the skin. Treatment packages are available
What age should you get a facial?
Facials benefit all adults, men, and women! Anti-aging facial should start at 25. Teens can also benefit as their skin starts to change and can get a facial as early as 13 years old with a parent’s consent.
What are anti-aging treatments?
Thanks to the wonders of science, and innovation by skin care professionals, you can choose from a wide range of anti-aging treatments. You need not have wrinkles or discoloration to actively participate in an anti-aging regime-many smart consumers begin caring for and protecting their skin at a young age.
Consumers today are opting for minimally invasive procedures to avoid downtime and the unmistakable appearance of having had surgery. People may notice after treatments with your skin care professional you simply seem healthier, happier, less tired, and more confident.
What treatments are good for anti-aging
Stem Cell Facial, Firming Peptide facial, and our collagen boost LED Facial.

Who can benefit from anti-aging treatments?
Anyone who uses sunscreen is already participating in an anti-aging regimen, and there is so much more you can do. Treatment recommendations will vary according to skin type and condition, chronological age and skin maturity, level of sun damage (everyone has some), and the goals you have for your skin. Your esthetician can outline your options and make recommendations. We recommend beginning preventative antiaging treatments around the age of 25 when the production of new collage and elastin begins to slow. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”! However, it is never to late. With consistency we can correct signs of aging and have you looking your best.

What to expect from anti-aging treatments?
The results of your treatment may be obvious right away or may take some time to achieve. This depends entirely on your program and the methods used. Your skin care professional should be able to outline realistic goals for you. In some cases, skin is in poor condition and needs to be strengthened and conditioned before anti-aging treatments can be performed. If you are suffering from acne, dermatitis, or rosacea, you may have to set your anti-aging goals aside until you’ve cleared those symptoms. The good news is you may gain younger-looking skin as a side benefit of clearing and treating these conditions. Series packages are available.
What about home care?
It’s key to commit to a home care regimen to maximize your investment in the treatments your esthetician provides. As the DMK model says it is the Esthetician job to “Remove & Rebuild” it is the client responsibility to “Protect & Maintain” the skin.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea (rose-AY-sha) is a chronic skin disease that causes varying degrees of redness and swelling, primarily on the face, but also at times on the scalp, neck, ears, chest, and back. It is considered a vascular disorder (a disorder of the blood vessels). The actual cause of Rosacea is still unconfirmed. One theory is that having too many Demodex mites on the skin can trigger a reaction in individuals diagnosed with rosacea. Another is that rosacea is the result of bacteria tied to Demodex mites. Common characteristics of Rosacea include facial redness with swollen red bumps and small visible blood vessels. Triggers for flare-ups in people with Rosacea include spicy foods and alcohol consumption, temperature (especially extreme heat or cold).
How is Rosacea treated?
Rosacea cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. A combination of effective professional treatments and home maintenance products will dramatically reduce the symptoms and signs of rosacea. Home care products are available to purchase for existing Boutique Beauty clients.
What treatments are best for Rosacea?
Oxygen Rx Facial and DMK Enzyme Therapy, and DMK Quick Peel
What to expect from a rosacea treatment?
Please have your intake form filled out before your appointment. A brief consultation is included with every treatment service. Your skin may become sensitive during certain treatments. The professional skin care lines Boutique Beauty works with provide formulations that sooth the inflammation of rosacea. Your esthetician will carefully choose products for you that are least likely to irritate your skin. After your professional treatment, your skin care therapist can recommend a home treatment plan, as well as follow-up professional treatments.
What about home care?
Your esthetician can provide the best guidance on caring for your skin after a treatment. In general, people with rosacea should keep a diary of things that trigger their condition: environmental factors such as sun, wind, stress, exposure to heat or severe cold, alcohol or spicy food consumption, and irritating face products. Responses to treatments vary widely; trial and error is unfortunately part of the process when working with rosacea.
How do Microcurrent facials work?
A microcurrent facial uses tiny electrical currents to zap the nerves connected to your facial muscles, which stimulate and tighten the muscles and connective tissues of your face. Over time, the tightening of your muscles will “lift” your face, making your skin look firmer and tighter.
Will I see results with one Microcurrent facial?
It is not a one-off treatment; you will see temporary immediate results with your first treatment. It will take several microcurrent facials before the desired long -term results are seen. People will often get a microcurrent facial on a weekly basis for a period, before reducing treatments to bi-weekly treatment.
The number of sessions required depends on the client’s age and skin condition. With a series of treatments, followed by regular maintenance, the results from our Microcurrent treatment are immediate and long lasting.
Does Microcurrent Hurt?
The Microcurrent procedure is not uncomfortable. In fact, it is relaxing. There is no pain, swelling or downtime.
How many treatments will I need?
Most clients need 10 treatments to achieve a full “face-lift” makeover. Clients with greater aging effects such as severe neck sagging, deep creases, or distinguished “crow’s feet at the brow”, may need up to 15 sessions.
To start, clients need a minimum of 2 sessions their first week, then one session per week thereafter until the treatment is complete. Those who are on a short timeline (preparing for a wedding, accepting an award, etc.) may be treated twice per week in order to complete their treatment quicker. After your 10 sessions, your look is maintained by receiving booster treatments every 2-4 weeks.
How Should I Prepare for My Treatment?
Drink plenty of water, and do not wear cosmetics or lotions to your treatment.
What should I expect during a treatment?
During treatment you will recline comfortably in a treatment chair. Your technician will determine which signature frequencies to deliver to the targeted tissues. The microcurrent is delivered with probes, pads, or special gloves. A gel is applied to the skin to enhance conduction. Overall, the treatment is relaxing. You can even sleep.
Are microcurrent treatments for everyone?
Microcurrent facials are non-invasive treatment, but they are not suitable for everyone. People with medical and metal implants, as well as people with severe and chronic acne, should avoid the microcurrent facial. Pregnant women are also advised against using microcurrent technology, simply because the treatment hasn’t been properly tested on pregnant women.
Clients who have past or present health concerns or questions not listed must consult with their physician to determine if microcurrent is right for them.
Contraindications to microcurrent use:
- Pacemaker or other implanted electronic devices
- Pregnancy (client or esthetician)
- Metal plates or pins in the application area
- Under a physician’s care for a disorder, illness, disease, or injury

Is there downtime? Can I wear makeup?
There is no downtime with this treatment. Little to no peeling will occur but you may experience slight redness after the treatment that will subside in a few hours. Eye makeup and lipstick may be worn immediately, and all other makeup may be applied the next day.
Is SWiCH™ safe to use during pregnancy?
Your skin care professional will have a list of ingredients for the SWiCH™. Please consult with your physician for their opinion on what is best for you and your child. While there are no known contraindications, there is also no data on the effect of SWiCH™ on pregnancy. We believe in erring on the safe side and recommend avoiding as many chemicals as possible during pregnancy.
Can I have the SWiCH™ treatment more frequently than one per month?
We do not recommend it. The skin needs time to process the changes and get ready for another treatment. In some instances, such as very oily, thick skin, the SWiCH™ could be given every three weeks.
Is it safe and/or beneficial to use SWiCH™ on the hands, arms, and décolleté?
Yes, SWiCH™ works well on the hands and lower arms for age spots, discolorations, and general signs of aging. It is safe for use on the neck and décolleté, although it is generally more sensitive than the face and the client may have more flaking and irritation. They will need extra home care products.
Do the treatments need to be stopped at some point?
As long as the skin continues to improve and it is in healthy condition, the SWiCH™ treatments may be continued indefinitely. All treatments at some point seem to reach a plateau. If you experience a standstill in progress sometimes taking a break and continuing with a series of regular facials for a few months will allow the skin to renew. Going back to a series of SWiCH™ later will give noticeable results once again.
Does the client have to stop all glycolic acid products before the SWiCH™?
Absolutely. We do not recommend mixing other product lines (especially glycolic acid) when the client is having SWiCH™ treatments.
Will the SWiCH™ help acne?
The SWiCH is an anti-aging treatment. There are better choices for acne such as the Oxygen Rx Treatment, DMK Enzyme therapy or our Face Reality Acne program. The skin type and grade of acne will determine what treatment is best for each individual condition.
Will the SWiCH™ help to rid the skin of brown spots?
Yes, it will. The client should use the White Veil Brightener two weeks prior to the first SWiCH™ treatment. It should be used daily along with the Vitamin C Reversal Serum and the Light Day Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF-37 for the duration of the SWiCH™ treatments.
